#3 Getting photos taken with celebs (and being all ironic about enjoying it)

sweet aid worker vest, George

Expat aid workers love being smart-asses. Part of being a smart-ass is looking down on anyone who has the audacity to attempt any kind of ill-conceived commentary on the place we are currently holed up in. This includes celebrities.

“Hah! What does Ben Affleck know about the root causes of the conflict here in Zambekistan?”
Meeting such celebrities in the flesh when they are here on mission does little to hinder our critical faculties. We don’t get starstruck. We are hardened aid workers. But we’ll play along and pretend like we are excited. In an ironic way. And giddily show off the photos to all our friends. In an ironic way….

Aid workers like to have their parties where they can all talk about how important their work is, and make fun of their security teams.

Unless that celebrity is Sarah Palin, in which you try not to be in the same shot…

Surely the hideous vest deserves its own entry? Beloved of balding, slightly paunchy security officers and loggies everywhere.
There’s one being worn in my office at this very moment….. sadly not by Mr. Clooney.
